My Great-Grandmother

My great grandmother's name was Eleanor.  I am the only kid in my family who knew her because she died when my mom was pregnant with my sister.  Everyone called her Ama.  Here are some of the things I know about her...

Ama and me

She was a middle child.  Today would have been her 102nd birthday.  Wow!  When I was born people say she was "tickled" that I had red hair because there hadn't been a redhead for awhile.  She had four kids, six grandkids, and when she died she had 5 great-grandchildren.  She lived in Massachusetts.  When her husband died, he had a company and everybody said, "Oh, you should sell the company now that he's not alive" but instead, she just said, "No, I'll run the company!" which is pretty cool for that time.
She was also a good cook.
That is all I know, but I am trying to learn more about my family history.
Try to learn a story about your family history, you can learn a lot of interesting facts and anecdotes!

  1. This piece about Ama is so touching . . . and well said!
She was a kind lady. She wasn't one to give many hugs but she gave of herself to others. In her early years, her family came first, both at home and at her husband's office when he needed more help there. In herlater years she worked very hard to help retarded people. In fact, there is a home in West Palm Beach named for her where a few people in need live with assistance.

  3. Would you like to know how your grandmother came to be called Ama?
Okay-----her first grandchild had a babysitter/nanny while his mom went to work. This babysitter spoke only Spanish so he was learning both English and Spanish back then. Now, the Spanish word for grandmother is abuela. If you combine the first letter of abuela and the last 2 letters of grandma, you get Ama. And that's how our Ama got her name. :)
